Like in my most recent thread, I want to make an MP4 from a DVD using the 2nd angle while still having subs (what I'm importing is a Japanese film, but I want the Japanese credits (2nd angle), not the English (1st angle). I can get the 2nd angle using MacTheRipper, but if I want subs it exports the subs as a separate .SPC file and I don't have any idea really how to combine the files.

Handbrake will make a subtitled MP4, but does not allow for a video angle selection.

After a fair deal of digging, I discovered a program titled "0SEx" that will give me a .VOB file with what I want. Now the problem is being able to "flatten" it, for lack of a better way of putting it. More specifically, I need a way of making the file "hardsubbed", so I can convert it to MP4 with the subs there. All I can think to use is VLC's transcoding feature, which so far is not getting it done.

Any ideas? Let me note that I don't want a multi-angle MP4. All I want is a normal MP4 for iPod, but with subtitles and the 2nd video angle. Thank you.

Handbrake can also use the VOB from 0SeX. That should give you what you want.

I've tried that, but it doesn't recognize the file. :/

If you change the output format (Fmt) in 0SeX from 'Prog. Streams' to 'DVD Folders', does that make your file(s) better processable to Handbrake?

this is more clear and concise to what you want than what was in the other thread.

Here's what I would do if in your shoes.

Tools: MTR (newest) (For commercial DVD Ripping)
    Apple's DVD Player
iShowU ( for creating the transcoded DVD to a Flattened DV NTSC file)
VisualHub ( or iSquint) to get the video into mp4 format for iPod.

Step 1. Obviously, rip the DVD to the HD using latest MTR. ( v. 3.0r14m)
( if not commercial, then copy it to the HD normally through finder)

Step 2. Open the ripped DVD in DVD Player. Set the screen size to Normal,
Turn on the sub selection ( English) and select the 2nd angle you want to see
    in DVD Player.

Step 3. Launch iShowU, and set its capture window to the size of the DVD Player window,
set where it records the file to the HD ( if enough space exists), and then
set the codec to DV NTSC, and the audio to capture from internal sound
( if not enough HD space ( about 36GBs or so for a two hour movie, free
up some space, or choose a FW external HD.)

Step 4. Hit record in ISHowU, go back to DVD Player and press play.
iShowU will record the Video, as it plays with the subs turned on, the language
track you selected and the angle you selected, in real time to a DV NTSC file.
( leave the mac unattended, do not do anything else while this going on,
make sure all other programs and sleep are off before doing this)

Step 5. When done, quit iShowU first, then quit DVD Player.

Step 6. Open the DV NTSC file in Quicktime player, and verify that the sound is fine,
the subs are viewable, and your ending is what you want.

Step 7. Quit QT Player. Launch Visualhub or iSquint.

Step 8. Select the iPod tab in VisualHub, select the type of device to optomize for
( I use Apple 5G), and if you feel daring, turn on h.264 compression.
Check the box to import into iTunes after processing.
Drag and Drop the DV NTSC file into the window, and click encode.

Step 9. The file is done, and it is loaded into iTunes. Get Info on the file,
and fill in the necessary fields for the ID3 tags. Sync to iPod and your done!

    You can also:

in steps 7 and 8, use MpegStreamclip instead of VisualHub / iSquint, if you have that, or ffmpegx
if you have that. I prefer VisualHub, as the files it produces are great, and it round trips
to iTunes, saving me a (manual import) step. You could also use QT Pro if you have it,
starting at Step 6, rather than QT Player, and just continue through to step 8.

Darn, I tried it, and I thought it'd work. Handbrake recognized it, and when I checked the picture preview (found by clicking the button in the lower right of the program in which you can alter the dimensions), the credits' shot had the Japanese credits. I made the MP4. Then, when it finished and I played it to try it out, the end credits were English. Beats me why that happened. :/

I may try terryj's idea. Do any of those programs cost money?

Tools: MTR (newest) (For commercial DVD Ripping) is $40 US
Apple's DVD Player is free, comes with every mac
iShowU( for creating the transcoded DVD to a Flattened DV NTSC file) is $20US
VisualHub $32US ( or iSquint, free) to get the video into mp4 format for iPod.

So there's no free way of doing this (getting the 2nd angle, subs, etc. in iPod MP4)?

You'd at least think that VLC's transcoding feature would work, but it hasn't so far...

EDIT: Oh, MTR is MacTheRipper. I have that (I'll have to check which version), but it'll be strange importing that when I want subs and it always rips the subs as a separate file (an .SPC).

I actually just found iShowU and downloaded it from Apple, and it didn't cost me anything to get the .DMG, so hopefully I'm alright...

I have iSquint, as well as MPEG Streamclip and ffmpegX (which you mentioned could be alternatives), so I should be set hopefully. I'll test things out God willing once my other movie finishes running in Handbrake.

EDIT2: Rats, I have to buy iShowU's full version since the demo sticks green text on my video.

Any other alternatives that won't cost money?

    MTR: Your not importing that.
You are ripping the commercial DVD as A FULL DISC RIP
to your local HD. THis way, you aren't hampered by r/w
off of the DVD Drive, and it should make things go faster/smoother.

As for your other question: nope, so how bad do you really want this to
happen? You get what you pay for, and trust me, there are PLENTY
of uses for iShowU besides this. Well worth the ca$h IMHO.

and you mention you have MpegStreamclip, but do you have the
QT Mpeg-2 component necessary for this job? ( US $20)

I'm not sure I if I have the component. I'm really starting to wonder if this is still worth it. Thanks for all of your help, though. ^^
