Is there a way to transfer the video files from a Pan DMR-EH55 to the computer? I would like to upload them to YouTube, and generally manipulate them from my PC.
Thanks!

I've resulted to copying them to a DVD in chuncks of 4.7GB, then converting the .VOB to .flv. A long process, but the only solution I see.

Um, I think that link refers to someone who wants to import YouTube .FLVs into Premier, not .VOBs. This poster wants to go the other way around, from his DVD recorder to his comp then up to YouTube.
A couple of quick ways to do that, once you've burned your DVD on your Panny, is to use VOB2MPG or TDA to import your DVD video into your computer. These two programs have the advantage of importing your .VOBs into distinct .MPGs for your titles or chapters, respectively. Then you can convert them to .FLVs with something like Super, or if they're not too big, up them to YouTube directly and let it do the honors of converting to .FLV. -
DVD Recorders were made to prevent this very thing. No way to get around it, unless you can usccessfully hack your recorder and install firewire or USB. If not, then the long way is the only option.
As a side note. The ReplayTV is one of the few (maybe the only) external recorders that has a network capability where you can transfer recordings to your computer's hard drive and do whatever you want. -
Just an example of how the output from a DVDR to computer is restricted on North American units, Pioneer just introduced a DVR-660 in Canada that initial specs said had an Ethernet port for use in a computer network. Wild exctiement, leading to the actual truth that it's one-way only, into the DVDR, and only for pics and audio files... even mentioned MPEG4... more excitement, until reading MPEG4 AAC (audio) files.

With the EH55, your only option is to burn discs and sneakernet them over to your computer.
The new Pioneer DVR-660H-K, available in Canada, can connect to a computer via an ethernet port or USB, but according to page 102 of the manual, the former only works with Vistaand even the latter is only for file transfers from a computer to the HDD of the Pioneer, not the other way around.
No user reports have surfaced yet that I'm aware of from people who have tinkered with this function to see how it operates in the real world.
Edit:Synchronicity - Your post appeared while I was writing mine! BTW, according to the manual, you can also transfer DivX files, but again only one way, as you say. Still, for all those people who have been wanting to network rather than burn and sneakernet their DivX files for playback on their DVD players, this is nice. I would speculate this should work for Xvid files, too.

Still not a way to access DVDR stuff directly thru a computer, but might be useful to others as one way to get DVD video ready for upload to YouTube? -
I have an e500 & it does have a network connection. I can control some things on my Panny with that, no special software needed. There was supposed to be some 'future' software to let us connect to the net & computer more throughly but I guess it never came out. Nuts.

There's also some good info in the Video Streaming subforum of this site. -
Transfer them with a RAM disc and open them on your computer. Then convert them to any other format. Been doing this for a long time...
