hi, i am a newbie to the subtitle thing..
i have Subtitle workshop but i don't know what to do with it,, ehehe
my problem is that i have an avi with softsubs which are in .srt
i have a dvd player that reads avi but when i load the subs, the subs are either in wrong font/format and end up looking really bad..
i just want to play my avi and push the subtitle button on the remote and make good subs come out without really having to hardsub it into the movie or converting the avi to something else...because it works well in my computer~
i dunno what to do
and please be easy on me, i am a newbie and i'm willing to learn!

Does the srt work on your dvd player? You can't change any font, size settings in a srt because it doesn't carry any such information it's up to the dvd player subtitle settings.
You can make switchable image subtitles using for example AVIAddXSubs or Sub2DivX and it should work on most divx dvd players. You can then adjust font and size and such.
And it would be good to know which dvd player you have. -
well the srt does work on my player but it shows the wrong font and you are right,,
it doesn't have any formatting in it..
i'm trying the AVIAddXSub and Sub2divx as I type and i'll check if it works..i'll be back to ask if it doesn't..
thanks for replying~~
--edit:
okay uhm it looks good but it did hardsub it...i think
is there a way for me to make the subs work when i press the subtitle button of my dvd player?
which kind of format works as softsubs?
srt? ssa? etc,, -

There are also graphic formats of subtitles (SUB, SUP, eg) which your player might be able to use. You generate these from the text subs with, eg, Subtitle Creator. -
What is the make and model of your DVD player? If you would tell us that, it's possible that someone who has it can tell you if there are special requirements for subtitles.
Some DVD players that support subtitles with AVI only support a limited number of character sets. Unicode subtitles almost never work. The Latin character set should be OK. Cyrillic is often OK. Other character sets (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and so on) are often NOT supported. If your subtitles are in Unix text format and not Windows text format (the end of line characters are different), this can cause problems. Some players demand that the subtitles be named the same as the movie, but with a different extension at the end. So if your movie is called MYFILM.AVI, your subtitles need to be called MYFILM.SRT. -
ok so I downloaded Subtitle Creator and I have yet to see whether or not it works. thanks for giving me the tips everyone~ i hope this solves the problem...
