If from a camera it might work with mp4camtoavi. Or else super, winff, mpeg streamclip, quicktime pro, winavi, etc.

    What's video container (AVI, ...)?
What's used codecs in this file (check used MediaInfo, GSpot, ...)?

The file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner.YOUR-09F6CB889E\My Documents\My Videos\DSCN3904.avi.AVI cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

this is exactly what it says when i try to import the movie. i'm not great with this stuff. so maybe i'm reading it wrong

  7. Use MediaInfo
Media Info supplies technical and tag information about a video or audio file.
    and/or GSpot
Establishes what video and audio codecs are required to play any video.
    BTW
This AVI file is after transcoding from MOV?
    If yes, what's used converter?
