first, thanks for all the help

I am using KMPlayer V2.9.3.1428, be honest, this player really rocks, love it so much. But there is a problem though, the author or compiler did not decode (if i use the right word) those codecs. we are able to watch .avi .mkv and many other popular video formats, but unable to edit them use VirtualDub.

So, i download Pure Codec, dont know if anybody knows that, with the installation, VirtualDub is working, but every time when i try to edit a .avi file, a warning shows up, as shown in the picture.

Is It going to affect the output file??? But i also want to know that, if i only install kmplayer, and i want to keep using VirtualDub, what should i do? hopefully no more warning? what else should i install?

  2. The KMPlayer and VirtualDub?
    It's not relate.

Usually The KMPlayer use 'build-in' decoders.
    Nothing install in system.

VirtualDub required video and audio codecs installed in system.

    BTW
If AVI file have VBR audio, use VirtualDubMod or eventually latest experimental VirtualDub (1.8.0).
In VirtualDub 1.8.0 configuration You can disable Warn when VBR audio is detected.
Usually i'm not have problems with MP3 VBR in this version.
VirtualDub 1.7.8 not support VBR audio - possible A/V desynchro.
    Or try Avidemux.

    Mod didn't work~~~

i tried, if just install kmplayer and no other decoder, virtualdub wont open .avi files, not support. So, what would be the best solution, if any, to make virtualdub working, what kind of decoder should i install. I do want to keep the kmplayer as the primary player though

  4. Some general info about codecs and Windows:

Windows has two main video systems: Directshow and VFW. VFW is old and deprecated (by Microsoft) but many programs still use it. VirtualDub does its own AVI file paring but still uses VFW codecs for video decompression. Most media players use Directshow codecs or their own built-in decoders.

There are two audio systems in Windows too. Directshow and ACM. Again, VirtualDub uses ACM and most media players use DirectShow.

Playing an A/V file involves several components: a file reader, a file splitter (splits audio and video streams), audio and video decoders, maybe colorspace and audio converters, and finally audio and video renderers. Media players select and connect these components when you open an A/V file. Some mecia players rely on DirectShow to build this "filter graph". Others perform some, or all, of them on their own.

KMPlayer has many built-in components but can fall back on DirectShow for components it doesn't have (you can also force it to use DirectShow components rather than it's built-in ones).

It sounds like you have two problems, a missing video codec and MP3 VBR audio. VD Mod can't handle VBR either. It's telling you to extract it, then re-encode it to a CBR format. But it may be easier to use VD 1.8.0 which seems to get along better with VBR.

VD will tell you that you're missing a decompresser if it needs a codec. Most times the Xvid codec may be all you need. MKV is a bit different. But you can drop one of the files into Gspot and it should tell you which codec you are missing.

  6. I find that VirtualDubMod usually does handle VBR audio correctly -- but you have to answer NO when it asks if you want to fix the header. But in general the new 1.8 version of VirtualDub is better -- even it if is in beta.

I don't know what "Pure Codec" is but be careful about installing codec packs. They often install codecs with conflicting components and don't properly remove all components when uninstalled. This can leave your system in a very unstable state.
