Any beeps from the BIOS? Without those for guidance, it could be a number of things. Can you hear the hard drive spin up? Will the DVD tray open? Are the fans running?

I would open the case and first reseat all the boards, the RAM and all the plugs. If no help, unplug all the drives except the boot and all cards except the video card. Try again.

From there, it's down to substitution most times. But a couple of things to try first. Remove the RAM and try to boot. You should still get beeps. Remove the video card, then unplug the hard drive. These steps aren't always definitive, but most times you should still get BIOS beeps.

You can try substituting the RAM, then the video card. Then try a different power supply. Even though the front lights come on, the PS may still be bad. You might take a sniff at the PS fan grille and see if you detect a burnt smell.

From there, you have the CPU and the motherboard.

EDIT: And I forgot the obvious first step, check the video monitor and connections. If you have another monitor to try, that would be the best.

First, you try this before pulling it apart

A: Remove onboard battery, and check motherboard manual about clearing cmos, and follow those instructions
B: Leave in this state for a few hours
C: Reset cmos jumper, and reinstall battery

Turn it on ... hopefully thats as far as you need to go

Now if the monitor works on another system, and lights on drives are on, but nothing else ... aim for psu replacement ... strange things happen when there not fully operational

the computer freezing up beforehand causes me to think there is something else going on here, but just in case here is what I've had good success with when the pc doesn't boot up all the way:

1 - unplug the pc from the wall
2 - hold the power button down for a few seconds
3 - plug it back in and turn it on.

  6. What were you doing when it froze? Any error msg at all?

Any other indications of problem? Anything unusual at all, of any kind?

What and when were the last changes to hardware and software?

How long has it been running with no problems since the last change?

    Is the PC overclocked?

    What were the temperatures like?

Do you have access to a replacement power supply?

Had the exact same problem on a pc a couple of months ago. While in use it froze for no apparent reason. Pushed the reset button to restart it and from that moment on it refused to boot. The power supply woke up so the drive lights came on and the fans started but that was it. Turned out that the reset button was stuck in and it was restarting constantly before it even got as far as the BIOS. Found this when I tried it again with everything except the power switch disconnected from the motherboard and it worked. Connected everything one at a time until the fault came back.

Never did find out why it froze in the first place though.
