  1. I am trying to burn a DVD in Adobe Encore DVD 1.0. I'm putting episodes of a show on a disc. When I import the first episode it says the file is 465MB, but when I put it on a timeline it says 2.9GB of the disc is taken up. Why does it suddenly jump up in size like that? Is there anything I can do to change this, or will it simply be 2.9GB on the disc no matter what? I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me with this.

Encore only works with 720x480 MPEG-2 compliant DVD-Video spec files.
    It's likely trying to re-encode.

Most likely because your source video is highly-compressed (and non-DVD compliant). So the DVD Authoring program is telling you the size that will result by converting it to dvd-compliant mpeg (check your project settings for what videoa and audio type/bitrates it will be using to compress your source video).

    Regards,

  4. I tried to convert it into 720x480 MPEG-2 in the program SUPER, and it still takes up 2.7 GB. Is there any way to change this so I can fit more onto a discc?

not much if you want it on a dvd and to play in a standalone. you may be able to reduce the bitrate somewhat, but at the price of decreasing video quality.

Huh??? That doesn't make sense. So they can't accept anything lower than 720x480? WTF kind of software is this?

  8. It also accepts 720x486 and 704x480, so yes it can be a pain that it only accepts these sizes.

  9. You might want to upgrade to Encore CS3. I've never used it but I'm sure this has been rectified since 1.0 which is really old.

It is a limited subset of the DVD spec. See What is DVD (top left corner) for the full spec. If you don't want Encore to encode for you, then you have to learn how to encode yourself. This means learning about resolutions, bitrates, and how to use a bitrate calculator. If you insist on using Encore then you will be restricted to the subset it supports.

if you are converting AVI files and don't need complex menus, you might want to look at FAVC instead.

This has been my complaint for years now. It's a DV-source-only workflow. Too limiting for my needs, and most home users in general. I have CS3, and it's still like this.

This is why I use Ulead DVDWS2, Apple DVDSP and TDA. I only have Encore CS3 because it comes with CS3 MC, and it has a Flash-DVD feature that I want to start using later this year.
