My Panasonic S-27 moans and groans for 30-60 seconds when reading a disk. It started doing it a couple of months ago. Once it reads the disk, it works fine. This happens on about half the disks I put in and sometimes on disks it had no trouble with before. Is there a simple repair?

I suspect the bearings on the player could be wearing out and unless the discs are perfectly balanced, you may be getting more noise. Some DVD players/burners rev up to do the initial read of the disc, but most ones like that do that from day one. I had one that sounded like a airplane taking off. But if you are getting no read errors, it may not be a problem, at least yet.

    And welcome to our forums.

My Panasonsic DVD recorder used to moan like that too, and over time, it became worse. It turned out I just needed to clean the spindle on the DVD drive. If you can open up your player, the following thread has instructions for cleaning the spindle:

Thanks very much, redwundz and usually-quiet. I'll try cleaning it as that thread suggests.

  5. I think the S-27 still used a DC brush spindle motor. If so, it's about to go and you'll get the dreaded H07 error soon.
