I am looking for suggestions for software to back up my DVD's.

What I'm looking for is a something that recodes not transcodes and has multi-cpu support and multi-pass (4) support.

Also, would there be a difference between the best programs for backing up movies as opposed to TV series?

    Thanks,

I would try DVD Rebuilder, some of it's supported encoder probably support multi-cpus.

Yep dvdrebuilder is what you want. I know the free HCenc supports multi-cpu. However the version that comes with dvdrb doesn't. You will have to download the latest HC (v0.22) and put it inplace of the HC that comes with dvdrb.

Only downside is HC only supports 2 pass encoding. CCE (dvdrb's supported commercial encoder) does 4 pass but I'm not sure if it supports multi-cpu.

CCE does support multi-CPU systems, however the version that supports a large (and realistically, useless) number of passes costs $2000 if you buy it legitimately. Most people will be hard pressed to see he difference between 3 passes and 5 passes, let alone the lunatic fringe who believe 9 and 11 passes makes a difference. HCEnc is more than good enough for this type of work in 98.37% of cases.

    Thanks for the suggestions,

I usually like to do 3-4 passes, so I'll try the CCE first. I have 2.67 and 2.7 already. If that doesn't work I'll try the other. After reading all this and doing a little research it seems that DVD RB will do what I want.

Do you find that the free version is good enough or would you recommend upgrading to the Pro.

I personally use the free and find that it does exactly what I want but the pro version does offer some extras that some people say are worth the money.

    Delta 2.

I know, passes seem to be much debated. Usually i do 3+1.

    Firebird.

Looking at the DVD RB website, I'll probably get the Pro for the additional multi-core support. After all, what's the point of having a quad core processor if your not using the extra cores as much as possible (more speed, more power!!). But, I'll try the free this evening to see if I like it at all.

You can get multi-core support from the free version simply by updating the version of HCEnc it uses. If you are using CCE SP with the free version you already have multi-core support. The features that make the pro version worthwhile are the re-authoring tools and, eventually, support for mobile device encoding.

Tried DVD-RB last night with CCE. The free version didn't get along with CCE SP 2.70. 2.67 worked okay though.

3+1 passes with slight reduction on the extras took 81 minutes. All in with DVD decryptor ripping and burning with ImgBurn took me to 112 minutes. It functioned just as I had hoped and mostly used between 55-60% processor usage on the quad core. I'll be buying the Pro version this weekend.

Anyone know if it is any good at doing TV episode disks? I would probably want to do 2 episodes per disc to preserve quality and from what I have read so far it only does everything or just main title.

Forgot to mention. My only concern was output file size. Given the quality issues I have read about near the end of DVD-R or +R discs, I thought that ~4 600 000 bytes was a little large. Is there any way to adjust this in a setting with RB?

  13. I assume you mean 4,600,000,000 bytes, and that's not so large. It's only about 4,387 MB, and, depending on the type of DVD disc, they hold over 4,480 MB. But yes, you can make it smaller. I actually make mine bigger, and have never had any problems.

Open in your Rebuilder.ini file. You need to add a line in the [Options] section:

    CCETargetSectors=2236400

That's the default size you get with no line entered. Lower that number for a smaller size. There's more information here:

    and here:

By the way, the free version works fine with CCE SP 2.70. You probably just set it up wrong.

    Thanks for the links Manono.

It could be that I set the 2.70 up wrong. I was doing it in a bit of a rush trying to play with the new toy Still a kid at heart I guess. After I get the Pro upgrade I'll try it again.

The biggest reason for getting pro is simply to support the ongoing development of both the free and pro versions.

True, if a program does what you want and is reasonably priced for what it does, then it should be supported. As far as movies are concerned, this fits the bill for me.
