I have just purchased an HD LCD TV and was wondering what type of VCR/DVD combo would work for recording shows in HD. Is it possible to record shows in HD instead of SD format on VCR? I've seen terminology such as upconversion and upscaling HDMI, but I'm not sure what it means. Are these features something that I need to look for? Would I need an HDMI cable for both the cable box and another one for VCR/DVD?
Also, I had another question. Is it possible to record one show while watching another from a cable box?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I would try find a HDTV-box with HDD recording capabilites, you will probably NOT find any box where you can save to DVDR or copy to your computer(because of copyright issues).

You can't record HD on a standard VCR or DVD recorder.

Do you have the answer to my other question:
Is there any type of set up where you can have a vcr connected to a cable box and record one show while watching another?

No. Cable boxes typically can only tune one channel at a time. Assuming the channel you are wanting to watch isn't a premium or digital channel, you can likely tune and watch the show with your TV.

Since you have cable, an HD-DVR is likely only $10 (at least it is for Charter here in St Louis) or so more a month. The current model DVR has dual tuners allowing you to record two channels simultaneously or record one channel while watching another. Plus you will be able to remove a piece of hardware from around the TV.

DVR is $14 here a month.
I am curious about how you go about tuning and watching the show with your TV, if it is not a premium channe.

Assuming your TV has a built in tuner, you typically just enter the setup menu and tell it to channel scan (same as the setup on your VCR and/or DVD recorder.
