    got 4x LG (forgot the modle) DVD burner and it can't read any cd. im still able to read cd when i bought it maybe year ago but now it cant. any ways to fix it aside from buying a new one?
    hacking the Net using typewriter :D

    Sounds like the laser may be bad. 4X burners are old. period. You can pick up a new 20X for under $40 shipped.

    DVD drives use separate lasers for CD reading/burning. Usually the DVD laser dies first, but it sounds like your CD laser is gone instead. Usually cleaning doesn't help, as they share the same lens as the DVD laser and that apparently works. But you could give it a try.

    Does it just not recognize that a CD is inserted or it sees it but can't read it? But most times it's just easier to replace the unit.

    If someone can't find a decent burner for less than $40 - they've found themselves shopping the "burner aisle" at a major retailer. Some "evil" online places still try to rob the poor. I knew newegg could come thru.

    The last guy that I saw peddling drive repair services wanted $50 to align the laser - on ebay.
