  1. Hi,

I want to convert the kids DVDs into DIVX files to save space on my mediacenter.

The specs from the dvd I want to convert are:

    Video: 720x480, 29.97 fps, Pixel 10:11 (NTSC 4:3)
    Audio: 48000, 2 ch

I'm simply want to convert them to divx, without changing anything, for tv playback.

I'm using TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress, this thing is suppose to do everything automatically but I'm wondering if it sets the settings correctly:

    1. The Aspect Ratio is set to "Pixel 1:1" do you thing I should change it to "Pixel 10:11 (NTSC 4:3)" to match the original movie on the DVD?

    2. the framerate is set to "30 fps (Progressive)", the original is 29,97 ( not sure if progressive or not ) so I'm wondering if I should swtich this to "29.97 interlace" or "29.97 progressive" ?

    Thanks a lot!

Change the resolution to 640x480 1:1 A/R if your source is 720x480 4:3

The frame rate and interlacing depends on your source file.

AutoGK will do a good job of figuring out these details for you.

  3. Thanks, will check AutoGk.

But I'm not sure why you suggest to resize? The Vod is 720x480 and when I play it on my tv it comes out ok so I was guessing as a divx it would be just the same?

When I play it on my tv, which is 16x9, it plays with the black bars on each side which I think it ok since a 4:3 ?

    Thanks!

  5. ok...

Last question, do you know, when a NTSC dvd is 29.97 fps, is this 29.97 interlaced or progressive? Same question for PAL 25 fps ?

I should select the same as the source when doing my divx right?

NTSC 29.97 is interlaced. PAL could be either, but assume interlaced.

  7. You almost never want to encode interlaced video with Divx in interlaced mode. Players don't really know what to do with it. You'll be better off with an inverse telecine (for film sources) or a deinterlace.
