Hi
I have a HP DVD 940i on winXP
I have wrote a few dvds from downloads
all seem to play fine till lately
this last one my comp says drive is empty, tried factory DVD plays fine
but my Sony DVD player plays it / it's capable of playing either NTSC or Pal
I was wondering if some how I could have wrote it in pal format
and if so how do I tell and how do I get the writer back to writing NTSC
I checked and my DVD writer is set to Region 1 but it also says I only have 4 changes left
I thought I read you could change it 5 times ?
also I have a small TV with builtin DVD player lately it says Wrong Disk when I put in a standard DVD but it will play all the DVDs I have wrote lately
am using Nero 6 OEM version

Are you using ulead dvd moviefactory to make the dvds? You can set PAL or NTSC in most dvd author/converter tools.
And region coding has nothing to do with PAL or NTSC and home burned dvds has usually no region. If you want your dvd writer region free for dvd playback you can use anydvd or dvd43. -
I used WinAVI to convert to DVD formet
then I used Nero to write it
I can not find a way to check in Nero
And region coding has nothing to do with PAL or NTSC
ok so now I really lost
ok installed dvd43
I still can not read any DVD I have writen lately
but can I wrote a while back and also the first couple I wrote with this writer
this writer is less than a year old -
Since you are performing conversions, I assume you are using source files such as avi. Since the final output is viewable on your Sony player, then the conversion and the final dvd are likely fine.
Using different conversion software and/or burning software would seem irrelevant at this point because the final product is already usable.
My first thought would be that your burner is failing. Although why it can recognize and burn blank media, then not recognize the burned disc is a bit odd. I've had burners in the past stop recognizing burned media, but they were often bad burns.
Region coding is a way of marking a disc to prevent playback in other areas of the world.
NTSC and PAL (check the glossary) are different video formats (which use different resolutions and fps).
Regardless of the region code (which doesn't exist on a disc that you burned yourself) or the video format (which may vary by the software used), a PC should be able to read the discs (PC's don't care about video format).
Open my computer or Windows Explorer, then insert the DVD. Does Windows recognize the disc? Can you view the files on the disc? If the answer is no, you have a hardware (burner) issue. If the answer is yes, then you are likely having a software issue.Google is your Friend -
