I origionally put this post in the authoring forum, but maybe the ripping wizards want to take a crack at it........
I had asked a question here a long time ago....is it possible to simply rip the .vob's from a dvd, and burn them onto a dvdr? Of course the answer is no, I know it's not as easy as that.....but.....someone did send a reply stating that videopack 5 would accept .vob files dropped into it. I got the program, and yes, it does!! I ripped "Little Nicky" for a test, (3.5 Gb) and dragged the .vob files into videopack. It accepted, and even previewed the movie flawlessly for me. Here's where the issue comes in.....

when I go to record the disc, the program reencodes everything and then there's an error that comes up saying "vts_xx_xx.vob contains .ac3, .vob can only be used as is" and then it will stop encoding and won't burn. Has anyone had this problem? Any easy way to get around it? Do I have to strip the audio and reencode manually?
Any input is always appreciated,
Trixx

There are many programs out there that do not have the ability to use ac3 audio. If you had authored a vob with pcm audio, it would probably work. Another problem you might have, which I have recently encountered, is that a movie, like little nicky, will have dss encoding on it. This means, that even if you copy the vobs, and drop them into the proggie and burn, the end result might still be unplayable. I had a DVD of Amazon Women on the Moon, which used pcm audio, not ac3. The resulting disk made a horrible buzzing sound, and the video wouldn't play. I ripped it normally, removing the dss, and the end result was perfect. They (the evil dvd producers) encode these things specifically so we CAN'T just drop them into a program and burn them.

VP5 is SUPPOSED to be "compatable" with AC3. It says so on the web site and the box.
But my experience with VP5 is that many of the promised "features" aren't up to snuff yet.
But if I know those Germans, they will keep working on it till they get it right. Just look at the latest VW commercial!
