  1. Hello,

I recently tried using AVIAddXSubs to add Japanese subs to a video file for viewing on my PS3. I made sure that the Character Set was set to "SHIFTJIS" and the Language Code was set to Japanese. My PS3 also has the latest firmware update. However, when attempting to view the file on my PS3, all the subtitles appear as "???". I even set my PS3's language to Japanese, and I still can't see anything but question marks when I play the videos.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your time.

  2. OMG! I'm also having this problem too! I tried everything but they didn't ever work, no matter what I do... even setting to Shiftjis... and re-doing the subs myself.... it all comes out as random garbled Chinese characters OR "???" too.... >.< I've been searching everywhere for an answer to no avail... until I came across this question, I was hoping that someone would have an answer... but I guess no one does as of yet...?
I'll continue to try out more scenarios when I have the time... and I'll post if anything works! Well I wish you luck on getting this work, but hopefully someone would be kind enough to point us in the right direction? ^^

Try saving the subtitle file(s) in Unicode (UTF-8?), rather than in SJIS/JIS/EUC (if your editor allows it), then add the subtitles to your video with AVIAddXSubs.
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

  4. Hi, thanks for the suggestion! But actually the subtitles are already in UTF-8... so it's kinda difficult to figure out if there something else to it...
