I just bought a Pioneer DVR-550H-K and followed all instructions in the manual for hooking up to a cable box. When I change the video input to accommodate the recorder, the picture is perfect, but there is no sound. Also, when I auto-tune, it doesn't pick up any of my channels available through the digital cable box, just the channel my TV is set to (ch. 4). I have a standard GE TV (not HD or anything)

If your channels are turned by your cable box, then "auto tuning" within with the player isn't likely to tune any channels. It can only tune channels if it has a separate cable input and even then, it will only be able to tune the "basic" analog channels, not the digital channels.
Your audio issue is likely a cabling issue. If the cable box is connected via S-Video/component/DVI, then you also need to have a seperate audio cable.Google is your Friend
