    hi,

i drop a movie into ffmpegx and the hard drive thrashes for ages and computer becomes a bit unresponsive. i leave it for some time and finally ffmpegx says for the movie: Unrecognized.

    vlc says about it:

    stream 0: codec h264 video
    stream 1: vorb audio

does all this mean that i don't have the necessary codec? any ideas how to get ffmpegx to be able to convert the movie? i'm using os x 10.3.9. does ffmpegx use the same codecs as quicktime uses? if so it's a case of getting something which will allow quicktime to play the movie in question? (at the moment qt can't play it "this movie could not be opened"). any idea wher to get such a codec?

    thanks.

What's the extension/type of the video? (AVI, MKV, MP4, etc.) Does it play in VLC or other non-Quicktime players?
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?

avi. yes it play in vlc.

    thanks.

  4. I'm not sure there is a reliable way to store OGG vorbis audio in an .avi file. This may be the reason why ffmpegX doesn't recognize the movie. This file may also be an .ogm video that has been renamed into .avi.

I would try to change the file extension to .ogm and demux it with D-Vision. Then I would convert the separated audio and video streams with ffmpegX.

finally got round to trying this. D-Vission appears to have worked very well according to your advice, worked very quickly as well. so i now have a .avi video only file, and a .ogg file...

how do i do that bit? how do i drop two files, one audio, and one video, into ffmpegX in order to convert them together? ffmpegx only seems to accept one file.

    thanks.

I was meaning that you could convert them successively, then remux the two converted streams together with the appropriate tool in D-Vision or ffmpegX.

oh i see, right, then use ffmpegx on that. well ffmpegx is nearly 50% of the way through doing what i've started off doing so i'll see how that goes. if it doesn't work, i'll try what you meant. thanks very much.
