DVD Won't play past menu on laptop

I have a problem playing a DVD and I didn't know what forum to post it in so I posted it here. I hope thats alright.

I have a DVD (The Notebook) that I bought from the store (not a burned copy). When I try to play it on my laptop, it plays the menu just fine, but once it gets past the movie rating screen, it has some kind of error where there is a black screen except for a little green square in the upper left corner. This has happend using Windows Media Player, InterVideo WinDVD, and InterActual Player. I do not have a DVD player hooked up to a TV at the moment (I'm on a little vacation) so I can't test the DVD itself.

Can anyone help me out with this problem?

My first thought would be if any other DVD's work on the laptop. Knowing if other discs work or not, will help narrow down the possible problem.

If you have any other purchased DVD try to play that, if not go and rent one to view. If they play the problem is your Notebook DVD, even if it is pressed it could be a bad disk.
Also check if disk is clean, no big scratches or heavy finger print marks.
If other get stuck also, than it is your player- tracking problem. Will have to be replaced.

I forgot to mention, please make sure that you have latest firmware installed for your DVD Drive. Check manufacturer site for an updates or check this site for your drive.

Firmware shouldn't matter for commercial disc playback.
