Still confused on upconverting

I ordered an HDMI cable through NewwEgg so I cannot experiment yet.

I bought an Insignia NS-1UCDVD upconvert dvd player http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8202615&productCategoryId=abcat0102005&t...#productdetail .

In the user guide it states "For 720p and 1080i resolution on the component video out, only non-copy protected discs can be played back. If the disc is copy protected, it will displayed at the 480p resolution without HDMI cable connection. With HDMI cable connection the picture may not display properly."

Does this mean if I want to upconvert a dvd movie that I rent from Blockbuster to 720p I have to use the HDMI cable, but with this method it might not display right? Are all the upconvert DVD players like this?

That's what it says and that's true for 99% of the players out there. There are only a very few that will upconvert over component cables. But one way or another - through the player or through your TV set - your DVD will be upconverted to the native resolution of your TV set.

That's what it says, but I have trouble believing that to be true. If so, why would anyone want one? If it is true, I hope you can return it easily. My guess is that they're covering themselves in case of some sort of foul-up. HDMI can be tricky sometimes. Or the manual was written by "furriners" that don't speak or understand English.

No, of course not. With a digital cable (DVI, HDMI) all upconverting players are supposed to...well...upconvert.
