I have a plasma HDTV that does not have DVI or HDMI inputs. Are there any BD players which will output 720p or 1080i over component for both BD and DVD's?

HDCP is required for HD playback or upscale of copy-protected commercial discs, and that is only possible with HDMI or DVI.

I have seen reports that the Sony BDP-300 will do what you want for non-commercial DVDs and BDs.

  3. Your TV will do the upscaling anyway.

Yes, my TV does the upscaling, but I would like to get a BD player and start watching HD instead of SD DVDs. OTOH, I don't want to get rid of the 400 or so DVDs I have, at least not at this time.

To clarify my previous post, since it seems like you don't understand what I told you:

IMO a BD player would be a waste of money for that TV. You can't play a store-bought Blu-Ray disc in 720p or 1080i without using HDMI or DVI, period. The copy protection on the disc requires HDCP to be in place, and only those connections support it. Older TV's without those connections, and some older TVs with them, where support for HDCP was not implimented correctly, can't be used with a BD player to view commercially produced Blu-Ray discs using an analog connection, except in SD resolutions. My understanding is that in some cases component output can't be used to view home-made BD discs either, except at SD resolutions.

If you want to know why this is true, the consumer electronics industry reached an internal agreement three years ago that restricts component output to SD resolutions for BD video players starting in 2010. In 2013 analog output will not be allowed on BD players anymore. http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2006/02/6255.ars

In addition, I haven't seen even an upscaling DVD player in the past couple of years that allowed upscaling via component output. I went shopping for a upscaling DVD player for my parents late last year and all of them seemed to use HDMI for upscaling.

Not to worry, in the case of DVDs. If the TV upscales, it will usually do as good a job as the DVD player or BD player when it comes to SD video received via a component connection.

True that BD players require HDCP/HDMI to play higher than 720x480 but you might find media players that play non-drm'd files to hd analog component. Some BD players play camcorder 1440x1080i AVCHD format at H-scaled 1920x1080i. Models vary.

For home made DVD upscale to my Philips analog component only HDTV, I use a JVC XV-N650. It upscales nicely but it will limit commercial DVDs to 720x480p.
