  1. I have some old vhs-c tapes from the 1980's that I want to back-up. My first attempt a few years ago was with a cheap JVC vcr without tbc, dnr, etc, and an advc-100.

I've been reading a ton about the jvc vcrs like the 9911, but some posts in another thread about the JVC SR-VD400US dvhs deck has me intrigued. It appears to have all the same tbc/dnr/filters when you look in the manual on jvc's website, but it also has a firewire connection. What I can't figure out is, can I hook this unit up via firewire to my PC, and bypass the advc-100 completely? This would provide a better output than my cheap $100 jvc that lacks the tbc/dnr/etc, and then I could sell the advc-100 to offset the cost of the SR-VD400US.

Any idea if the firewire on this unit works in that way? If not this unit, I read some good things about the Mitsubishi HS-HD2000U. Is the tbc/dnr/etc in one better than the other?

EDIT: Looking at the manual for the SR-VD400US, under "Video Stabilizer" in the manual it says it only works for tapes recorded in EP. On an older dvhs deck, the HM-DH30000U, under Video Stabilizer there is no mention of EP only. I might be obsessing over the SR-VD400US' capabilities, but if I can pick up a new one for about $400 and get the same great image from the older jvc svhs decks, then I'm very excited.

Thanks for all the help, this place is great!

    I found this:

    http://www.avforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-129092.html

"For non D-Theater material, if you're using a HTPC you could also try connecting the JVC to the PC with firewire, running DVHStool and using the PC's DVI or RGB output."

    Here's the tool:

Hope this helps somewhat, I don't have a DVHS deck but have been looking to get one as an alternative to a DVDR/VCR combo.

  3. Picked up a JVC HR-S7800U off ebay for just over $100, so I'm stoked. At that price I can add an external TBC if I need to or pick-up a dvd recorder to make things super easy.

Any suggestions when it comes to using my advc-100 or a dvd recorder? I can use the advc-100 to capture to vegas and do some editing, but for big projects, capturing straight to a dvd recorder sounds 100x easier. How is the quality on the newer Philips dvd recorder?
