I just upgraded to JVC GY-HD100 (from a DV cam) to record and stream (live) Church events. At the moment I can only do this in DV mode since my streaming software (windows media encoder) can't handle HDV. Is it possible to record HDV to tape and at the same time capture DV via FireWire? I don't know how to make this work on the JVC.

What's the advantage of shooting in HD if I'm just going to be producing DVDs?

What media types (apart form hard-drives) can be used to burn HD formats?

I don't have a JVC, but what you're attempting to do sounds like alot of work. You can't just convert the HDV, or just encode to DvD from the HDV, straight?

Nicer DvDs since it's a nicer source. It would justify encoding to higher bitrates in this case to obtain some of the source sharpness available transferred to the final encode (DvD) whereas in DV source there wouldn't be as much of that.

The typical answer would be blu-ray discs, and that's what you'll want to do with them in the future.

If this content is important enough I'd say keep the source in HDV. Find a way to store it with hard drives today. You'll be glad you did since you will want this encoded to a higher quality format like blu-ray in the near future when it should be much more common.
I hate VHS. I always did.

That would be camcorder model specific. Ask JVC if it isn't in the manual.

Alternate is record HDV and capture standard def S-Video/audio to Windows Media Encoder for streaming.

  4. the camera should have a separate setting in the menu for playback output - HDV or DV over firewire - to allow in-cam conversion. but, it may just be for playback not live streaming.

I like the idea of recording in HDV and capturing standard def S-Video/audio to Windows Media Encoder for streaming. Of course the price of this is storage.
