  1. just got a new Oppo 980 and wondering if I should expect to see video from flash USB drives; so far I copy a few short AVI files to my flash drive and tried to play them on the player and audio was OK but video was kidda frozen...

is it really USB2.0? or just compatible to USB 2.0

    anyone?

perhaps, the flash drive I used was not good enough but not sure which one will be good enough...

Well i should start off by saying that i have never dealt with that particular DVD player, but i think i can offer some sound advise.

First off, USB 2 should have nothing to do with smaller resolution (lower then 1080i-p). Second all USB dvd players iv dealt with had nothing to do with teh USB flash drive but with the actually divx chip itself. More then likely (90% sure) its the chip inside the dvd player. A sign of any cheap "divx' player is a processor that cant view AVI's properly.

I know thats not what you wanted to hear and i hope other will tell you differently.

  3. Other USB/DVD players I've seen that advertise USB 2.0 compatibility only have USB 1.1 ports. These usually start having problems when bitrates get high. Try burning to a DVD and see if playback improves.

The raw transfer rate of USB 1.1 may be 12,000 kbps but after all the protocol overhead is closer to 6,000 kbps. The USB protocol is pretty CPU intensive and the wimpy CPU's used in DVD players can't seem to handle bitrates over 3,000 or 4,000 kbps. My Philips DVP-5960 starts having problems around 4000 kbps (audio + video) via USB but it plays over 8000 kbps fine from a DVD.

Other MPEG4 features that cause problems on many players include packed bitstream with multiple b-frames, GMC, QPEL, bad A/V multiplexing, and frame sizes over 720x576. You can use tools like GSpot and MPEG4Modifier to check for these.

The following site is mostly about the Philips DVP-642 but the information useful for most set-top players:

The Oppo 980 uses a USB 2.0 port. The issue is likely your flash drive or the files you are trying to play.

The only way to know for sure, is to burn the file(s) to cd/dvd/cdrw/dvdrw and play from disc. If it works, then it's your flash drive, if it doesn't, it's the file.

  6. yes, I've just talked to Oppo support guys and was told in general, it should work well and in my case it could be a flash drive itself (I'll check that using a different drive) or some limitation...

but the files I tried worked well if I put them on CD... so it's a flash or just limitations...

Memory speeds of flash drives vary. Most vendors do not identify the memory speeds. I suggest that may be your problem.

Flash drives are extremely similar to the SD and other memory cards which Sandisk and some other vendors offer in varying speeds at varying costs.

If you are strongly inclined to use flash you might consider one of the adaptors which allow you to use SD cards to make a flashdrive and purchase a high speed sd card. Otherwise it is trial and error to find a brand that works.
