HI, I bought a used computer for my mom.It runs XP, and has 40 gig hd. Plenty for what she needs. It was built by a computer shop.(not dell, gateway etc.) It only has an ethernet connection, but she can only get dial up where she lives. What do I need to do? She wants to use AARP internet for seniors. Do i need to take it somewhere and get a different modem or is there another way to handle this?
Thanks for any and all help.

Yes, you need to buy a modem for that computer. You can install it in one of the available slots inside the PC.

Just a thought, but if it only has a 40 Gig HD, it's prob'ly a bit slow as well, and XP plus Internet Security updates can make old computers on dialup really a drag to use.
You might consider trying one of the Linux LiveCD distros, they lighten the load on the CPU a lot, and usually come with very user-friendly software like Firefox, Thunderbird, & Open Office or Abiword.
I only mention it because only some dialup modems work 'right out of the box' in Linux, so getting the right one keeps the option open.
Also, more expensive but very desirable- Verizon is offering a USB gizmo that gives you high speed wireless internet anywhere a cell phone works. Gizmo is free, $60/mo for unlimited access. -
Sprint and AT&T also offer wireless/cell phone access.
