I'm finding some commercial DVDs that seem to resist upconversion on my Oppo 980 ? Or perhaps some do, but I can't confirm it. (This would be over the component connections, as I don't think this Oppo model can upconvert over the HDMI.) When I query the Toshiba LCD display with the info button, it says "480p". On others, it shows "1080i", which is what I was hoping for (When it works, the upconversion may look good or it may not, but that is another matter.)

When in Las Vegas, don't miss the Pinball Hall of Fame Museum http://www.pinballmuseum.org/ -- with over 150 tables from 6+ decades of this quintessentially American art form.

PAR for the course. Commercial DVD won't upscale in a DVD player*. Don't buy any more (DVD or players).
Feed 480p to the HDTV and let it upscale.
* The players detect copy protection and per plan inhibit upscale even though upscale has nothing to do with copying except in their warped view.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

I also believe you have your information backwards. The older Oppo models upconverted over HDMi but NOT component.
With that said, many players won't upconvert commercial discs.Google is your Friend
