  1. Hi Does anyone know how to transfer finished Mini DV home movies to CD-WR one movie is about 50 minutes long and is currently residing on my PC as a 7.5 Gig AVI file.
I'm using Vegas video 3, I understand that 7.5 does not transfer on to a 650 CD-RW but would Mpeg-4 help this problem. ???? I really don't know.

Any help would be great as I do not really want to burn the finished movies to VHS and loose all the Quility.

Also is there a difference between CD-WR and VCD and SVCD or are these just CD-WR that have been modified my software.

    Search Comp PM
    Start here
or just look in the tools section under CONVERT

    Tools: Latest TMPGEnc.

    Note!
To convert from DivX videos you have to install a DivX Codec
To convert from QuickTime MOV videos you must download the QTReader.vfp, copy it to the TMPGEnc folder.
To convert from MPEG2 videos you might need the mpeg2 plugin, extract and copy to the TMPGEnc folder. Or get a MPEG2 Codec and you can open and play MPEG2 with most applications..

    Launch TMPGEnc.

    1. Browse to open the Video source(if you have trouble opening a video file read the problem at the bottom of this page).

    2. Hit the button Load at the bottom right and open the correct Template that you find in the TMPGEnc folder under Templates, open
VideoCD(PAL) if the original source in 25 fps or
VideoCD(NTSC) if the source in 29,97/30fps or
VideoCD(NTSCFilm) if the source is 23,97fps.

To check what the FPS (frames per second) is open the the AVI/DiVX with Windows Media Encoder and select View->Statistics. If the video is some strange fps as 20fps / 60fps or something try with either PAL or NTSCFilm and see what looks best.

    3. Select Settings. (see below)

    4. Before You Hit Start, it is wise to use the File->Preview to see how the video with look like and it's also good to make a short sample before you encode the entire movie. You can encode some seconds and Stop and view the output.

    Settings
Under Video you can select quality, Use High Quality. (if it is DivX, ASF to MPG you can use Low or Normal Quality).

    Under Advanced select these settings.
Select Source Aspect Ratio select 1:1 (VGA).
and under Video Arange Method Full screen(keep aspect ratio).

And under GOP, Quantizer matrices, Audio and System need no changes.

Now you can burn the mpg as a VCD or first you maybe have to cut or join the mpg then read the edit mpgs.

    Problems:
If TMPGEnc gives you an error message when opening AVI, DivX,ASF,SMR,NAV be sure that you have installed the DivX Codec and also try with the Kristal Studio Pack codecs. If that does not work try to use the old TMPGenc 12a. If that does not either work try to change the settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow and increase the priority to 1 and try open the video.

If you get no audio error, out of sync problems or bad audio try to convert the audio to wav before converting. Use virtualdub read here how to do it.

If TMPGEnc freezes or crashes when converting a AVI, DivX, ASF, SMR or nAVI(unexpected decimal point calculation errors) try to convert the audio to wav before converting. Use virtualdub read here how to do it. Or try to "repair/fix" the avi, divx or the asf.

If you have problem converting MOV(Quicktime) Files You can try this MOV to AVI Conversion Guide or use QuickTime Pro and convert to AVI and after convert to MPG.

If you have trouble open WMV files try and rename it to .asf and open it.

I want a fullscreen movie, if the source is in WideScreen and you want it to be in FullScreen you just select under Advanced under Video Arange Method: No margin(keep aspect ratio) and TMPGEnc will then cut left and right so it will fit FullScreen.

If TMPGEnc gives you an error message when opening MOV or MPEG2
If it is a MOV(quicktime) video you need the Quicktime plugin and if it is a MPEG2 file you might need the mpeg2 plugin, just extract them to the TMPGEnc folder. You can also get this MPEG2 Codec and you should be able to open MPEG2 files in TMPGEc. To convert directly from a SVCD disc read this guide.

If you have problem open DV video, DC30+,MJPEG captured video or any AVI VFW then try to change the settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the AVI VFW and increase the priority to 1 and try open the video.

To improve the audio quality you can use a external audio encoder as TMPGEncs own audio encoder is not the best. One of the best audio mpeg layer 2 encoders is tooLame, download and extract all files to a folder. In TMPGEnc under Options->Environmental Settings->External tools select Layer 2 and browse for the toolame.exe.

    Done.

  3. Wow that was probably everything I need to know However I forgot to mention one important thing, "I want to watch the VCD on my DVD player, does the same apply or have I just wasted your time" I hope not and if so my appologies.

  4. Most dvd players also play vcd. I have an odd-ball (panasonic) which will only play cd-rw's. Check out the list under other / dvd players - compatability list. There are a ton of players listed and rated.
