  1. I'm transferring some files from another computer to my laptop which is running wireless N and my router is N also. The speed isn't great and I'm only a few feet away from the router. Ideas ?

  4. So plug in a short cable?

Really, first thing to do is eliminate one piece of the equation, the wireless being the easiest and most obvious.

  5. Well I should have mentioned it in my first post, I already plugged in the cable and the speed was fine.

  6. Yes, you should have.

The next thing you should do is to describe the problem and scenario using actual numbers rather than general terms, filesizes, numbers of files, times, actions happening on each PC, number of tests, etc. "fine" and "not great" just do not convey enough information, not even enough to say there "might be" a problem.

  7. Well I tried with a 4 gig file, over wireless it took about 20 mins whereas on lan it took < 5mins.

You do "of course" know that wireless is inherently much slower than wired?

    wireless "g" = 20-54Mb/s (real world speed)

    wireless "n" = 20-130Mb/s (real world speed)

  11. Don't remember what the LAN speed is off the top of my head, will have to check on that one. I also tested with a file off usenet and the wireless download is just as fast as the LAN download. Maxing out my 15mpbs.

The isp speed is the bottleneck when comparing the wireless and wired internet download speeds,if your wireless can do over 15mbits then it will have the same max speed as your wired but doing direct with wired to your laptop will allow you to download much faster than your wireless since your wired lan connection do around 1gbit where as the wireless does around 200mbit.
