Hey guys. Well I reformated my pc from vista back to xp sp2. I've installed the latest codec pack and when i play an avi file that uses xvid codec, the picture goes all haywire. The most obvious is a green vertical bar near the left side of the screen, also some colours gets seperated and shows some kind of a ghost next to the actual object (like the outline of a character gets copied and shown next to the character) also there are yellow stains everywhere. However, when I take a snapshot in VLC, the snapshot shows it's fine and doesn't show any problems.

I played the avi file in divx player, it was playing fine without errors. However the player is very buggy and freezes a lot.

I am not sure why this is happening it's the first time I've seen it. Some other avi files that also uses xvid shows fine.

EDIT: I took some photos of my screen just to show you guys what I am really seeing in VLC and WMP.

Codec packs often screw up more than they fix. Uninstall (if possible) the codec pack and/or just the divx codec. Then download and install the latest divx codec from divx.com.

Latest codec pack? what codec pack? As krispy kritter says does several codec pack mess up the playback. I would uninstall the codec pack and JUST install the xvid codec or use ffdshow.

thank you thank you thank you!!!! the problem was ffdshow but that's a bit weird isnt it i thought ffdshow is suppose to be very good? I uninstalled everything then installed xvid alone now it's working fine.

ffdshow is the best, I have used it for years without any problems.

Probably some conflict with some other codec or wrong ffdshow configuration. But you don't need it if it works fine with the standard xvid codec and other codecs.
