I tried burning an avi using so thinkthink moviemaker. it gave me a warning saying that the estimated file size is too big for the disc. I went ahead anyways but the dvd doesn't work properly. the avi is only about 100 minutes long

Never heard of the product, but video uses a simple equation
Size = Running Time x Bitrate. Obviously this piece of software is using too high a bitrate, and therefore cannot make the video fit.
I have found FAVC to be reliable and high quality, and it's free. Worth a look. Otherwise, ConvertXtoDVD.Read my blog here.

OK.. my bad. well I know this program works well I am just a noob. there is an audio bit rate which is at 640 and a video bitrate which is at 5000

if it is stereo, then the audio doesn't need to higher than 256 for AC3/MP2, and can be as low as 192 kbps if the source is 128 kbps MP3. For the video bitrate you need to use a bitrate calculator to determine what you should use. Baldrick (our host) has graciously provided an online calculator here : https://www.videohelp.com/tools/VideoHelp_Bitrate_calculator , or you can use an off line one like Vcalc
