    Hi there,

I followed the great guide to adding subs to AVI's here, https://forum.videohelp.com/topic153058.html
The movie before hand is 700MB, perfect size for a CD. The problem is, no matter how many settings I tweek using TMPGenc, the file is huge after converting/re-coding with the subs - 1.12 Gigs to be exact.

    What am I doing wrong??

I should mention that the original file is an AVI, and I'm trying to keep it as an AVI to fit on a CD.

Check the specs of the file with GSpot or AVICodec.
    Compare with the original.

    Perhaps the audio is uncompressed?

Are you converting to standard vcd? Then the file size will be the same. Unlock the template and lower the video bitrate.

edit: ooops, I saw that you are converting to avi. Have you lowered the video and audio bitrate?

Assuming TMPGEnc is not bad for .AVI encoding, I guess
the problem is not in TMPGEnc itself, but in the settings of
the .AVI codec you have chosen. Keep in mind that a watchable
700MB .avi movie frequently is obtained thru the use of 3-/4-/N-pass
and/or a high compression quantization matrix.

AlanHK, I already deleted the duplicate.

Baldrick, yes I'm doing AVI to AVI, but wanted to add subtitles and keep the a similar file size.

Midzuki, I believe I was using DivX compression. As in the guide, in TMPGEnc I went to File->Output to file->AVI File, and then selected DivX as the video compression. When choosing the compression, I have the option to set the Data rate - the default is at 0 KB/sec, and I just left it there. Then there's a settings button which will take me to the DivX settings pane, and includes a Bitrate area to select Encode Mode (with options: 1-pass, Multipass 1st-pass, and Muiltipass Nth-pass).
Keep in mind that a watchable 700MB .avi movie frequently is obtained thru the use of 3-/4-/N-pass and/or a high compression quantization matrix.
I'm a little simple, so you'll have to tell me what you mean by 3-/4-/N-pass.

I tried doing this a while back, tweaking various settings - I remember looking at the original AVI's properties (audio bitrate, video fps, video datarate), and trying to apply these in the settings of the duplicate. I thought I'd make another attempt at it now, and maybe I'll try a different codec, Xvid perhaps? Do you guys thing TMPGEnc is a good choice for what I'm trying to accomplish?

    Thanks for your input guys.

Yep, I didn't forget to do that. I'm encoding with XviD and the file size seems to be smaller, so it looks like it'll work. I'll let you know in an hour or so
