I have a 12gb avi video file that is 7.5 hours in length that I would like to burn on multiple dvds for a friend to watch on their regular dvd player attached to a tv, how do I do this?
Thanks

Read the guides to the left on how to convert and then how to author and welcome to the forums.

John0,
I could easily just convert the avi file to mpeg2 but it would be way too long(isn't there a time limitation for a dvd movie?) for a single dvd? Even if there is no time limitation I would have to so compress the video the quality would be terrible. How do I span the avi over multiple dvds to play in a normal dvd player? The guides to the left don't make this step at all obvious and I did attempt to look. For normal store bought dvds that I buy that I back up I use use ripit4me, dvd shrink, and dvd decrypter but this avi is a different beast with having to be spanned across multiple dvds because of the size?
Thanks -
One way of approaching this - you could cut up your avi into 3 x 2.5 hour sections with virtualdub in direct stream copy mode
Then take each avi and make a DVD of each using one of the easy to use tools e.g. avstodvd, favc, dvdflick -
There's no time limitation per se for DVD as you can, in theory, get over 10 hours of very bad quality if you wish on a single disc with a low enough bit rate. We've had reports of people actually doing this. However, anything above 3 hours probably needs to go on separate discs. Using DL media instead of single layer will allow for higher bitrates to be used and thus higher quality. However, some older DVD players won't play DL media at all or may stop at the layer break. If you want to use DL media, use only Verbatim DVD+R DL discs. Nothing else is reliable.
