    i dont know if this is the right spot for this but i just downloaded a video file in avi format when i went to play it useing wmp all i got was sound but no picture then i installed xvid and divx codecs now i can see the picture a little as well but its stretched up and down and squished from left to right. if anyone knows how i can fix this id appreciate it tnx

    Not so simple. Especially with WMP. It's not a great player, to say the least.
    I would try a different player first. Try VLC Media Player. If it then plays correctly, you likely have a codec problem. VLC uses it's own codecs and is a good test for player codec problems.

    You can try fixing the installed codecs or just use a different player, and bypass WMP.
