    hi I have a VHS DVD recorder and can back up my vhs tapes but they are encoded how can I decode them and what do I use

    You mean a DVD-recorder/VHS combo? Not good for backing up VHS tapes with Macrovision, I'm afraid. Must have 2 separate units and a TBC in between for those. Unless there's a Macrovision-free hack/firmware available for your combo.

    The only "hack" I'm aware of was for the older series Lite-On models.

    Hi:
    I use a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-350 to capture to my HD. No TBC needed.
    I go from the VCR via S-video to the card, it saves in MPEG-2. Even saves the CC if it has it.
    If I pick the bitrate right, I can go right to authoring and burning. Works great for these old eyes.
