Hope some one can help me.. My video playback has got Tourettes Syndrom. Ive only tried Avi files, but when I play them (and Ive tried at least 6 different players) they seem to randomly jump into fast forward mode for about 1 second giving it a kind of stutter.. I reinstalled my drivers, and my codec (Im using xvid) but mothing seems to work.. The computer is only 2 weeks old so memory shouldnt be a problem..also Im using XP.. Any help would be appreciated...

    Thanks..

Your computer specs are very incomplete, but what's there would indicate an older machine with slower CPU etc. Did you buy a new one two weeks ago, or a second hand model ?

First thing I would do is fill in my details correctly so the rest of can see what you are really dealing with.

One possibility is a mismatched Codec. Run Gspot on your AVI file to confirm the Codec that was used to encode the file and then make sure you have that particular Codec installed.

I bought a new computer..came installed with vista, but I formated and installed XP...

    Heres a few specs:
    Using Win XP SP 2
    Intel Dual core 1.8ghz
    1024 gb mem
Nvide Geforce 8400 256 mb set at 1024x768, 32 bit color, 60 Hz refresh rate
    250gb HD
    xvid 1.1.3

I think thats about all the relevant info needed, but I could be wrong..
also another point worth mentioning is earlier today I tried to play an avi file I copied from a DVD i burned transfering stuff from my old computer and it wouldnt work at all..when I ran Gspot on it is says codec not recognized.. it worked before on my older computer which was the spawn of a prehistoric dinosaur that mated with a turtle.. the problems semmed to happen after I tried to play that Avi.

Start with VLC, as it will play pretty much anything.

As an alternative to g-spot, try MediaInfo. It can give more detailed infor in codecs that g-spot doesn't know.

did you instal the proper video card driver? and you say avis but are they divx xvid raw etc? do you have hardware exceleration enabled? you said you reinstalled xp and it still did it? have you installed the proper motherboard drivers. if you are loading the same xvid codec each time maybe try a different build or better yet dont install one and use vlc. try to play with vlc in safe mode. it might be very slow but you can judge from there. get codec sniper and see if you have any broker codecs and fix them. dont load any "codec packs" you also said you have a dual core. did you install the dual core driver for your chip?

your discription makes it sound like a lag due to resorces or lack of but your computer is pleant powerful.

are these HD video files? ie 720P or higher? do you have the proper audio codec loaded too?

as you can see there are lots of reasons for this. you need to narrow it down. or give us lots more information

I believe I have figured out the problem.. After my first reinstall of xp I formatted my harddisk again and installed vista to see if it was an OS issue and it was even worse..I dont want vista anyways, so I got rid of it and installed xp again... this time the only thing I put on my computer as soon as xp was installed was the latest nvidia driver, xvid 1.1.3, ac3 filter, and my player (AllPlayer)..oh and an AVI file...It seemed to work fine, although I think I could get better picture quality. I then installed soundmax and the problems started again.. so I believe it is actually my audio driver.. at the moment I have uninstalled all audio and it plays fine. I am searching for an alternative to soundmax, but I dont know if soundmax is specific to my onboard audio.. Anybody have any suggestions or have you ever heard of this problem before... Thanks

Also, I have used different builds of xvid, I refuse to even think about codec packages, I think I have all the MB drivers

XP should have generic drivers for your sound. if you are having trouble google your mother board and driver combo to see what comes up. if your getting sound now then i wouldnt mess with it though.

I am using the MS generic driver and it works fine, except it doesnt seem to support the 5.1 surround option...I can change the speaker settings in control panel, but it doesnt do a thing...ohh well.. maybe Ill have to move this issue to an audio help forum.. Im just so frustrated! I spent alot of money on a new computer and the only thing I really use it for is music and videos since I live in a non-english speaking country and it is my only form of entertainment..So as of now I have to make a choice if I want kick ass sound or decent video.. Thanks for everybodys help...

    Peace!

Maybe you'll need an ADD IN audio card to work around the problem
First go in the BIOS (F2 or DEL) and disable onboard sound, then Install new PCI sound card
    FIXED!

no i would load ffdshow and try to use that to config audio. and again try VLC also load powerdvd try a demo of that for 5.1 sound. jsut make sure that you configure all media players to output 5.1. even your AC3 codec needs to be setup. open the config youll see a pull down for output. if you have sound with ms drivers then you can get the 5.1 to work too.
