I captured some DV avi to an 1 TB WD external drive.

However, I find when playing it back in Win Media Player from that same drive, it can be hitchy, particularly wihen there's lateral movement.

If I move that same file to an internal drive, no hitchiness.

Is this a problem with the Firewire data transfer? And why would it mainly be on a certain type of movement?

Is the 1TB WD drive connected Firewire or USB2?

  3. Firewire is rated at 50MB/s(400Mbps) which is fast enough for DV but your external drive could be the problem. Have you tried another player such as VLC?

    Windows could be the problem.

It'll happily do stupid things like try to create thumbnails for every video clip, at the same time as trying to play one video clip.

Depending on the drive, drivers and connection, this kind of heavy random access can make video playback impossible - even when you have 10x the required data rate and processing power available.

    Cheers,
    David.
