When I open a DVD recorded and finalized by my DVD recorder using IFOEdit, I see there are multiple cells per chapter (10 for each 5 minute chapter). When IFOEdit or dvdauthor is used to author a DVD. they create 1 cell per chapter. Out of curiosity as to why the two are different, I looked in the "Cell" entry in the VideoHelp glossary and found the following:

A 'Cell' is a small segment of a chapter (or part). It is the smallest resolution at which DVD navigation commands can act (e.g. 'Jump to Cell 3 of Part 4 of Title 2'). Typically one chapter contains one Cell but on complex DVDs it may be useful to have multiple Cells per chapter.

I spent an hour searching this site for answers to the following questions with no luck, so now I will ask the experts:

    1. How are multiple cells per chapter generally used?

    2. Is there a free authoring tool for Windows XP that allows one to do this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Cells are usualy scene changes so the movie can be cut any way you want, also they can be used in Parental level, so not all are played at certain parental restrictions.
They also help to locate layer brake in DVD DL.
Chapter does not need to have one cell, you can see on commercial DVD that chapters have usualy more than one cell.
I do not know any free software, but DVD ReMake can split cells and is not that expensive.

  3. VobBlanker can split chapters/cells, and is free.
