MOV to AVI without QT

I need to convert a few MOV videos from a digital camera into AVI, without installing Quicktime.
Impossible??

I cannot install Quicktime because 1. It doesn't work. The qt player simply does not come up! 2. It crashes numerous other programs on my computer. 3. It makes firefox crash or freeze and sometimes both!

MPEG StreamClip requires that Quicktime be installed, which is not an option in my case.

I tried mp4cam2avi and the documentation specifies the following:

You can't convert H.263 video to MPEG-4 with MP4Cam2AVI in one click, but there is a 2-step way:

1. Convert & join clips with 'Source video' and 'Lame mp3' audio (no video recompression, fast operation). You'll get avi with H.263 video and MP3 audio.

2. Open this file in VirtualDub, set 'MPEG-4' for video and 'Direct stream copy' for audio.

You should have both H.263 and MPEG-4 ASP codecs installed (FFDShow is suitable, it's multi-codec).

I have successfuly downloaded and installed FFDShow. However when attempting to open the "avi" file created by mp4cam2avi , it is as if VirtualDub doesn't even care that I have done this:

Couldn't locate decompresser for 'H263' (unknown)

Virtualdub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. Directshow codecs, suich as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

What should I try next?

If QT is crashing, it's because you have something wrong with your computer (and need to fix it).

It may not be the fastest, sleekest UI or most feature-packed app, but I've never known it to crash either itself or other programs, like you're saying. It IS quite stable.

Sure, you could try other avenues, but IIWY, I'd fix the problem with the PC first. I've installed QT on scores of computers and never once had a problem.

Once you find and fix that problem, not only will you be able to use QT, but other apps may make themselves available to you also...
