Alrighty then, obviously an out door sound stage isn't possible, however I would like to hear from people who have done some work out doors where the maximum effort was made to record a clean sound track.

What worked well, what sucked out loud.?

I've got a Rode shot gun mic, a boom and 25 feet of cable, along with a Sennheiser wireless lapel mic system.
The camera is a Canon XH A1 with settings for normal, primarily voice and wind noise reduction

Standard problems are passing aircraft (not much I can do there except do another take), DISTANT passing traffic seems to creep in at some locations, so again a retake to eliminate it. Wind rustling the trees . . . comes and goes, retakes remove most of it.

Some background noise is not the worst problem. The real problem Is the resulting sound after editing. The sound is not even across the resulting scene, potentially distracting sharp changes in background sound is what I want to avoid. Oh yes, an example, a chirping bird heard behind one actor that is not quite finished singing at the point the cut is made, and completely absent for the other actors . . .

Okay, I am ready to read your suggestions

    Thank you

If you cannot get a clean soundtrack, you will have to do like the pros do and dub in a quiet room and add sounds back to match what is on screen.

The last film I did I used a unidirection mike for the dialoge and a lot of retakes before I got enough to complete the film.

Add bird singing to your track to enhance your film.

ouch, I had already thought about dubbing the dialogue back in over the orginal sound, however I am not certain I can get my underpaid actors to sit down and do that.

I've been looking into SoundSoap and other apps to remove the stuff I don't want.
The SoundSoap demo looked pretty good. What else works well?

Unfortunately SoundSoap does not seem to work with Studio 9. I'm planning to upgrade to other software in the near future, but does anything work with Studio 9 (SoundSoap Equivalent?) I'd like to give something a test run (removing unwanted sounds) on Studio 9.

    Thank you
