Both show "cd" in windows explorer = normal

What program are you using to burn to cd-rw , and brand of media ... some are better than other's which might indicate time to update firmware for the cd-rw unit to handle newer media .

Try imageburn to burn to cd , works for vista .

How much work has unit done , could be getting close to being worn out as well .

See that you are on Nero ...

You didn't say if you have the Nero DVD plugin that allows you to burn DVDs.

DVD not a burner justa player, the CD is a burner, well it was until the DVD drive went in

If you added/changed/moved either of the drives after installing Nero, it may be detecting them wrong.

Usually, an uninstall/reinstall of Nero will correct the problem.
