It is 40% faster to use CloneDVD to clone a DVD to a hard drive folder and then import it from there for editing,
than it is to just import it directly from a DVD to one of those other programs.
Any downsides to that?
Interestingly, on another topic, I see if importing a DVD from a hard drive, it can also be 40% faster to save it (after editing) to a folder on another hard drive than to a folder on the same hard drive.

I think 40% is optimistic and certainly not the norm, however for large files there are certainly heavy saving to be had.
As for ripping DVDs to your HDD - it is essentially a file transfer, so if you have something that will do it faster then use it.Read my blog here.

I was talking about cloning the entire DVD to hard drive first then importing it from hard drive for editing
vs.
just importing it directly from DVD disc for editing.
As for 40%, I measured 40%on my system.

I was talking going from drive to drive. It is certainly faster and simpler to rip to the HDD first, then loading it than working from the DVD drive. However I seriously doubt (and I have never seen) consistent savings in the 40% range when editing from one drive and saving to another. I still believe it to be good practice to work this way however.

Right. Exactly.
(My system is not RAID, btw.)
Operating system was on Western Digital 120GB Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM SE (8MB)
And I measured 40% faster when importing a DVD from
Western Digital 250GB Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM SE (8MB)
and saving to
Seagate 500GB SATA/300 7200 RPM (16MB) (Barracuda 7200.10)
vs. just using Western Digital 250GB Ultra ATA/100 7200 RPM SE (8MB) for both import/export.
