hi, I have a new PC with Vista Home pre installed and i never got sound. I see my audio sound icon in the right corner and it has an x on it. The closest i get to sound it an error when i did something but no sound. If i get that noise error then there must be a sound speakers integrated. Speakers did not come with my system. Is there any suggestions to get my sound up and running?

A lot of PCs still ship with a small piezoelectric type speaker for bios beeps. This maybe what is generating the error beep.

It sound more like the audio hasn't been properly installed.

If you click on the icon does it bring up the volume slider ?

If so, can you click on the small speaker icon at the bottom of the slider ?Read my blog here.

i've just got a new notebook with vista ultimate on it.

Have a look in Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers>what do you have? I have High Definition Audio Device. double click on it should bring up device status> This device is working properly.

OK, if it is a desktop there are no speakers for the sound unless you buy powered speakers, if it is a laptop then they are built in. This is the general rule. There are a few Compaq business models that have a (1) speaker built in for business environments.

Have you checked to be sure it isn't muted? The red X makes it sound like it is muted or disabled.

Going back to it isn't broke, unless someone turned down the sound or muted it, no sound = Broke.

New does not equal good it can be new and still be broke.

My laptop has hotkeys for muting the sound on and off , Fn & F8 (on mine) . At some point in its life , yours might have had them poked ? My Device Manager reports my sound working fine , you could check theres no extra buttons in the control panel to report that the card is muted , Im on my XP laptop , my main PCs on Vista so I cant check whats on it at the moment .

Ok the "sound" that you have got from your computer so far is a warning or error beep from a "speaker" in your computer. That's all you are ever going to get form that "speaker" as guns1inger pointed out earlier.

To hear audio from your computer you are going to need external speakers or headphones, until you attach these you are not going to hear anything.

More info on your computer may also be helpfull notebook or desktop what connections does it have etc. what sound are you trying to get out of your computer and from what source.

Is it possible my sound is disabled or muted just like what someone said above? And i would just want the sound to be there. How do i check to see if it is disabled or muted?Originally Posted by The1

If the sound is muted it will say so when you click on the speaker symbol on the taskbar in the bottom right hand corner.

You said sound "not plugged in" would suggest that speakers are not attached. Which you already know.

Again you will not hear anything from your computer until you have speakers or headphones connected to it!

OK I use head phones for now until my check comes in so i get speakers. Now just plug the head phones in? Is there any configuring the audio sound? You was right the X went away now let me test it by playing a CDOriginally Posted by The1
