is there anything called hdmi engine in dvd players or is it just the port?if a dvd player without an hdmi port is connected to the hdmi in of lcd tv by using a svideo to hdmi port converting cable will it play hd content in original quality?if a similar thing is done for non hd content will there be improvement in quality?i also have a motherboard with in-built 16 mb graphics card.if i connect it to the lcd tv through vga to hdmi port converting cable will there be difference in display quality as compared to direct vga to vga cable?

One might call the electronics that handle the HDMI port an "engine" but it would make no sense to have the "engine" without the port.Originally Posted by gunukhan

Converting s-video (analog) to HDMI (digital) is rather complicated. It's not something that can be done in a cable. It requires a rather expensive conversion device. Converting from s-video to HDMI won't really increase the quality although this can be dependent on good the device does the upscaling from SD resolution to HD resolutions and how the HDTV handles the different inputs.Originally Posted by gunukhan

S-video is non-HD. So this is the same question and gets the same answer.Originally Posted by gunukhan

Note that fixed pixel displays (like LCD TVs) have to resize the incoming video to the displays native resolution. Each conversion degrades the picture. Generally, the fewer conversions the better. In most cases, you would be best connecting your DVD player to your HDTV with an HDMI cable.

Probably not. Again, it will depend on the quality of the conversion device and how the HDTV handles the different inputs.Originally Posted by gunukhan

Another thing to consider is how the HDTV handles the two inputs. HDMI will usually be overscanned (you won't see the very edges of the picture), VGA is often not overscanned because you may need to see the entire desktop from the computer.
