I have six DivX encoded videos to "Index" on a menu for a DVD using DivX Author.

    A) I can not find any other output than re encoding all the videos (4 or 5 hours) and lose more quality, when they are "as good as it gets" already.

    B) It seems that the the menu can only be used with the DivX video player; the menu is not useable with Media Player Classic.

This seems silly, so I hope it is just that the help feature with Author is simply as bad as most help functions and someone is going to explain why the above is all wrong and that DivX recognizes the genius of "Smart Rendering" as used in VirtualDub and that going to "X" in help will explain how to do it. Otherwise this new software is very disappointing.

Don't know why it insists on re-encoding, but it does seem to be the case. I would hope this is a generation 1 issue and fixed in future releases.

Yes, the menus features are only available currently on the PC using the Divx Player software, or on Divx Ultra certified standalone players. This is a well documented limitation.

Thanks Gunslimger; it makes me feel less obtuse to realise that the re encodong seems strange to others. This is a SINGIFICANT flaw in the product design and is significant enough to obviate the marketing of the product entirely. Perhaps you are correct and this version was released much too early. It is suspect when drop down menus have only the one "option."

    Thanks again,

  4. This is exact what I asked in https://forum.videohelp.com/topic333632.html.

Divx Author seems a ripped version of TmpgEnc DVD author (TDA) 3. I had the same problem when I authored the divx files. However, the TDA help file does mentioned it can do the smart render for divx files. I guess we need to figure out how.

When I did the DVD author, the TDA will do the smart render if the I transfer the video file through the TmpgEnc express first. But you have to set the output file format are DVD compliant. Then TDA will do the smart rendering for you.

smart rendering only takes only 6 mins for author 3 movies (6 mepg2 files).

  5. Go back to the source for your Divx encoded files and add them to divx author and let it encode them to divx. That seems to be the way it was designed to work.

My guess is that it does that to be sure they are properly compliant and have no errors.

  6. in TDA when loading file go to settings select vido encodermode then automatic smart render
then in profile&level select home theater profile

  7. It seems to me that I remember that if the divx source is different sizes it will re-encode all. Possibly that is the problem.

This would make perfect sense, but there is no choice in the, "encoder mode." All that can be done is re encode all. Is there another version of Author that allows smart rendering which is not mentioned in the 50 mb version's help that was downloaded to me?

  9. Hi, StehpenRH. I Finally figure out what is going on. I used the TDA 3.0.5 before, which the Divx rendering has flaw. TDA 3.0.8 get improve. After I upgrade to TDA 3.0.8. I can do the divx smart rendering.

But compare to the DVD smart rendering in TDA, divx smart rednering is still very slow, it still take hours for one movie rendering in machine, but DVD smart rendering only take few mins.

I would suggest that it is still re-rendering if it is taking hours.

In the DivX codec settings, there are various options in the "Encoding mode." They range from, "Fastest," through, "Balanced," up to, "Insane Quality." Without becoming too technical, would someone explain the differences? Is there more than differences in the speed of compression and the size of the resulting file? I am mainly interested in the visual quality of the video and the speed of the compression; the size of the compressed file is not overly important.
