    Hi guys,
This is probably a question that's been asked a hundred times, so sorry if it's been answered before as well.

I used to have a Panasonic DMR-E30, and now have an ES10. This weekend I was trying to backup a series I had recorded with the E30 (the TV show "Ed"). 19 of the 21 discs copied fine with Nero. 2 of the discs could not even be recognized by either DVD drive (TDK and Pioneer). I was able to pull the VOB's off after installing Isobuster (great tool!), but I'm curious what is really to blame for this failure - the recorder or the disc. Both of the bad discs played fine in my ES10, but not in my Panny S1 player.

I've been using Taiyo Yuden TYG02 discs (purchased from Rima.com) since 2004, and have generally been very happy with them.

Where should I be pointing the finger, the TY discs or the E30?

    Thanks for the help guys.

  2. Sounds to me like those two discs weren't finalized in the DVD recorder.

I had thought that too, but they definitely were as Panasonic DVD recorders show very clearly when you pop in a disc if they are DVD-R (unfinalized) or DVD-Video (finalized). They both came up DVD-Video.

I have a Panasonic DMR-E30 also, and the only time i've ever had that same problem and had to use IsoBuster to see & get what was on the disc, was because of not being finalized.

All textbook examples of a Non-Finalized disc.

If they were recorded on the E30 and you no longer have it i would not trust what the ES10 reports even if it plays.
Recorders are notorious for only finalizing disc's they created themselves, even by the same manufacturer, in otherwords, you can't take a disc made on one recorder & drop it into a diff. model and expect it to finalize it, i'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but that is generaly the way it works.

Well, the E30 is at my folks' house (gave them the hand-me-down) so I can test it out there sometime. Thanks for the tips!
