  1. I have a few movies I shot with my video cam I just got and uploaded them as AVI files to my computer I now want to covert over to my DVD's so I can watch them on my large tv. I have tried Nero but keep blowing up on me for some reason when I try to import the AVI file. What other programs can I try to achive this?

    Thanks

Assuming it's from a DV camcorder, it would be DV-AVI format, about 13GB/hour of video. Just about any MPEG encoder should accept it. The audio is probably PCM, so you can reduce it's size considerably by converting to AC3 with a program like ffmpeggui or similar.

I use TMPGEnc for encoding, but the freeware HC or even SUPER should be able to encode it. I encode the audio separately after doing my edits, then add back in when authoring to DVD. For easy, you can use ConvertXToDVD and it will give you ready to burn DVD files. Some of the other All-in-One DVD converters may be able to do that also.

With handheld DV footage, you usually want to use a fairly high bitrate, so optimum would be about one hour of video per DVD.

  3. Ok, Thanks. I also have straight AVI files I would like to put on DVD's so I can view on my DVD player on the tv. What is good for this? I tried Nero, but it kept blowing up on me when I tried to add the avi file. Is nero the only thing that does this?

    Thanks

  4. I would not suggest Nero to convert from AVI to DVD. I would recommend TMPGEnc 4 Xpress to encode your AVIs to DVD compatible MPEG-2 file. Other encodres like HC may be little faster but I am personally quite happy with all the TMPGEnc encoders.

After you get your MPEG-2 file then author it with TMPGEnc DVD author or any other authoring tool of your liking except Nero !
