how to get best output quality ?

Hi there, i have spent quite a bit of time reading these forums and have decide to finally register !!!

The problem i am having is i am using a Highlander dvd recorder to record televison programs and then wanting to edit them on my pc, i have tryed Tmpenc dvd author and whilst it is a great program to use the output picture is very choppy and terrible quality, i was wondering if what is the best program or way to cut out commercials, add menus, etc without having to re encode the whole thing at the end thus losing all the picture quality ? or is there a better way of encoding so i dont lose the quality ?i have tryed womble as well but it doesnt seem to want to open up the source file, i am usig dvdfab to rip the dvd vr to my hard drive. any help much appreceiated !!!!

I use Womble to edit the recordings from my Pioneer. It has no problems doing the basic trimming and commercial removal I need to do, and doesn't re-encode. I burn to DVD-RW, and use VOB2MPG to extract the titles for editing. I also use Womble to edit the programme streams I grab from OTA digital broadcasts.

I author with DLP, although the DVD version of Womble does basic authoring. GUIForDVDAuthor is free and can do pretty much anything you will need.

The only way to avoid re-encoding is to make sure what you have fits on a disc. If it doesn't then you have no choice but to either trim it down or re-encode. I record at a setting that puts 95 minutes to a single layer DVD. After commercial removal I get two standard length episodes per disc.

If you do have to re-encode, use a good quality encoder. HCEnc is free and very good, as is Quenc.

I don't know what your problem is with Womble - I have had no issues with it - however if you are just doing basic trimming, VideoRedo is worth a look. It is very similar to Virtualdub or AVI Demux in feel. If it has issues with your source then I would look seriously at what DVD Fab is doing.

Thanks for the reply, very helpful ! the problem i find with womble is it wont oen up the whole dvd as one file, it is seperated into 3 files vob 1, vob 2, vob 3, is this normal ? thanks again !

If you use VOB2MPG to extract the titles from the DVD you get one big mpg files, ready for editing.

Thanks again for the reply, every time i try to extract the files using vob2mpg it will only extract 1 vob file when there is 3, thus creating one mpg file which is only a third of the complete movie, i have tryed using dvd decrypter as well ripping it as an ifo and it gets to 40% and says cylinder redundency error or something along those lines, thanks for the help !

Ok i found a method even though taking a bit longer actually works for me, i ripped the disc to my hard drive as a dvd (Video_TS) then used vob2mpg to rip that into another folder, which did the full length mpg.

You can use VOB2MPG direct from the DVD for non-protected discs.

Just a quick question, im having trouble authoring in TSUNAMI-MPEG DVD Author PRO, does this re-encode the file or just straight burn it ? how do i just author it whithout having to re-encode, and can videredo do this authoring ? do you know of the basic steps to author using this program as i am very new at this. thanks again for the help !

The older versions of TDA did not re-encode, but I believe from version 3 onwards it does if your files are a) non compliant or b) do not match the project settings.
