HD Mpeg2 Conversion for DVDr use on HDDVD players

I'm currently working on an Avid Symphony Nitris system. It came preloaded with Sorenson Squeeze 3.5 but it seems the mpeg 2 capabilites are limited to 480p. I need a 1080i export. It appears I can export verious quicktime formats 1080i ala H264. But how can I get this into a 1080 mpeg2 file? My ultimate goal is to burn HD mpeg2 content to a dvdr for playing on a HDDVD player.


Any suggestions/work arounds or ideas at all are greatly appreciated.

you could buy sonic cinevision or procoder 3 or mainconcept h264 encoder (mpeg2 also) encoder for use with your system --

I'm not really up on Quicktime, but nobody has claimed to have used it to encode anything that an HD-DVD player will accept. Do note that you will have to burn your encodes as HD-DVD discs, even on DVD discs, for your player to have any chance of playing them. http://www.doom9.net
has some stuff in the forums that cover putting HD-DVD content on DVD-9 discs and it might be very helpful to you to take a look there.

BJ_M's suggestions on encoders is good, if you really think you must go to H264 material. They aren't cheap though. If you can live with good old MPEG-2 video, the free HC encoder does a very good job of encoding HD resolution MPEG-2, but any transformations must be done outside of it via AviSynth scripts.

(this is still dildatron) yeah I just need the content no frills. It's strictly for the EP's to watch in their office. Avid can be annoying. The only true HD export I can do is H264. All the Mpg settings restrict me to 480p from what I can tell. It works well with Sorenson but the only version of Sorenson I found that seems capable of doing true HD is aprox $6000. It's not enough that the editing suite cost us close to $100,000. We've got $70,000 decks as well. But they don't have firewire ports - so oddly enough what you can do with cheap HDV camera and some cheap software can't seem to be done with all our expensive luxury equipment.
