  1. Couple of years ago i used to record in divx or xvid because of my small hard drive.

But now it's mpg time @ my house (more stable, less % resource used, higher frame size...all good)

I use WIN DVR3 (intervideo) since it's the most stable software and encoder
*results of mpg encoders tests tend to prove it:

(The higher the Y-PSNR is, the badder the encoder is)

But i always wonder what could be the best settings to record analog source since i'm not 100% digital unfortunately.

For example my settings for GOP and sub gop are: 1,1(that means all images are I frames)
By the way if you know very good encoders, softwares to record in mpg real time, share some infos
All i want is a crisp image,no blocking

    The higher psnr the better.

    That's an awful pic btw,
and it's not encoders but mpeg2 decoders

  3. lol i get it all wrong then, well i must admit i wasn't sure at first
but what is sure is that its "decoders" like u said not encoders, so win dvr might be the best still(looking forward for a similar test for encoder)

    edit:

    what is Y-PSNR?

PSNr is 'Peak signal-to-noise ratio' (source here
it is mentioned: "Typical values for the PSNR in image compression are between 30 and 40 dB"

That chart appears to be from this paper: http://www.compression.ru/video/codec_comparison/pdf/msu_mpeg_2_decoder_comparison_2006_eng.pdf Look to page 21. The title is:MPEG-2 Video Decoders Comparison
