i find Morpheus to be a slow.

I get like 1-2 kps while on Win MX 4-5

also resuming is easier on Win MX and you can resume a download from a soruce with an altered name.

    -Star Wars Main theme
    -Star Wars Main

If these were the same, u could resume from the second one

    (don't always work though)

  3. Kazaa and Morpheus seem like they are the same damn thing! I have used them both, and on orpheus I download from members of Kazaa. Can anyone confirm that these are identical. Anyone with both, I like the find more source for download feature which lets you pull portions of the same file from many different computers. Speeds things up alot!!

  4. Jaw - your talking about Morpheus X... that is what u need to keep refreshing your dowmload sources... someone else provide the link, I've temporarily lost it...
Btw - Kazaa, Morpheus and Grokster are very similar programs because they are all made by the same groups of people. As for the speed issue, in general it helps if u download off of those who are offering the highest available bandwidth. 39 is not always the highest... I've seen this figure go up to 1024 before and had startling results when I tried downloading from it

  5. Kazaa and Morpheus are nearly exactly the same. Kazaa was created by a bunch of dutch programmers who then liscensed the technology to Morpheus and Grokster. Morpheus doesnt have spyware like Grokster and Kazaa. With Grokster however you can download MP3 files with a bitrate higher than 128. With the other 2 you have to download a registry crack

  6. Bearshare in on the poll and it's a GNUTELLA client. That network sucks.. slow ass hell!

  7. every program you listed is peer to peer and if you plan to download more than an occasional mp3 peer to peer is severley limited and slow as hell.

when you figure out how to edit the poll add in usenet newsgroups. if you havent got access to fast ftp sites then there is nothing out there that can match usenet newsgroups. no uploading and fast downloads.

if you dont know about newsgroups and want to learn more check out this website. http://www.slyck.com/newsgroups.html it has several guides for all the peer to peer apps you mentioned as well as a very good starter guide to usenet.

just to give you an idea what your missing...

  13. broadband users can get some help here but i really suggest trying your ISP server and possible some free servers before you shell out any coin but THIS IS FOR THE 56K USERS ONLY

most of you guys might have a problem with newsgroups because a lack of retention on your news server will not make things available long enough for you to download them. most ISP news servers have a short retention time of just 2 or 3 days. larger posts like movies are usually done over a series of days with 350 meg a day posted, however many times people will not follow this and it becomes truly impossible for you to download anything.

the solution to this is to pay a fee to use a premium news server. i know, most people say "im not paying to download things, what is this napster?". all i can say to that is the diversity and reliability of usenet make it a much better bargain than napster could ever offer. one of the best premium services around is easynews. they charge $10 for a month or 6 gig downloaded, whatever comes first. easynews holds posts for over 2 weeks so even a 56K could download a gig and a half VCD. so why the hell should you pay when you can download from morpheus for free? well lets look at some comparisons.

with peer to peer clients you dont know if your sources will stay around long enough for you to download what you want, as a result files can easily become corrupted by resuming off several different files. with usenet newsgroups if you see it it is there and you can download it.

with the exception of irc peer to peer is fairly new form of trading and the supply is not provided by the most connected people so it could take weeks before a new release gets around enough to download it form a peer to peer program. usenet newsgroups pre date even the world wide web so there are many people with good connections supplying newsgroups. new releases usually make it onto usenet within 1 week of being released.

putting aside speed of release date lets look at diversity. with peer to peer programs you often have to sacrafice what you want for what you can get. on morpheus you might have to download the DivX and convert to VCD because all you can find is the DivX. usenet newsgroups allow several formats to be posted to suit any collector. if you want VCD you look in the VCD groups, if you want DivX you look in the DivX groups, if you want asf or navi there are groups for that as well. there will be times when you cant get what you want off a newsgroups but the chances are much less.

i am feeling like i am starting to drone on here so inclosing i want ti point out one last thing. usenet is constant, once it is put up it can't be taken down. as a result you can find sites like www.binnewz.net that tracks what has been posted and reports it so you can find things easily. lets see the peer to peer that can do that.

personally if i were still on 56K i would be happy to pay $10 a month to say goodbye to unreliable peer to peer programs and still have a suply of downloadables. thats just me and i completely understand people who dont agree with paying a small fee. that binnewz site has some good resources on the links page to help you find both free and premium news servers. i just wanted to make sure all the options are represented here and some information is available to help you decide what is best for you.

    BTW
contrary to the general tone of my posts i do not see anything wrong with using peer to peer if it works well for you. no matter how we do it we are all basically doing the same thing.
    peace out,
    dumwaldo

  14. cheers for the info... I'd love to learn how to use MIRC and the like.....
Btw - Whats the difference between the stuff available through IRC and the stuff on the newservers???
This is probably all gonna have to wait until I get broadband.......
I'm really pissed off at the moment, I have been attempting the gargantuan task (don't laugh) off downloading all 1.8 Gigabytes of the Lord Of The Rings (Centropy version) form Morpheus on 56K. Man has this been an epic task. I'ts split into three parts. The first is 720Mb, the second approx 700Mb and the third 410. I've managed to download all of the third part (god bless Morpheus x in 1 1/2 days) and I've done 692 megs out of 720 on the third part. Yes that is only 28 Megs from completion!!!! and guess what??? I cant get this Bas@@rd to resume ... it keeps searching and searching and saying connecting and more sources, but over the last 24 hours nothing is making it take on any more data. Any ideas??? I'm not very optimistic.

www.slyck.com also has a decent starter guide for IRC but some additional IRC basics can be found at http://www.newircusers.com/index.html
the most popular program for using IRC is called 'mIRC' but it is not the only program. i do suggest new users start with mIRC simply because it is the easiest to find help for. once you understand how to connect to irc this page http://www.nadiar.com/fserv/ can help you understand how to use fserves if you need some more help with them.

nothing at all. many irc channels are promoted by usenet newsgroup postings.

one last thing... good for you downloading such a large VCD. if you have gotten this far i am sure you will find a way to get that second cd completed. if you figure out the IRC thing try looking for me on DALnet, i use the same name on irc.
    peace out,

  17. I just went on IRC again to try and sort it out.
Went to look for you on DALnet but there is 15 different channels with about 2000 different rooms in each LOL.

Is there any easier way of narrowing the search down ?

I can get into rooms and ask for lists but once I get the list then I am lost with commands and such to get the files off them.

    Any pointers.

  18. once you are connected to dalnet go to your status page and type /whois dumwaldo and it will give you some info including what rooms i might be found in.

I have tried most of those listed in the poll. My favorite is not listed. It is called DCconnect. It is much better and faster than anything else I have tried. The only downside is the program requires you to share files and different hubs(channels) has different requirements. One for example has an share requirment of 100gig's. I personally only know of one person who has that much to share.

My next favjorite program is winmx but that's only for mp3's

  20. OK. These are completely newbee to IRC and Direct Connect comments and hopefully give an insight to the programs for other new users.

I have been trying Direct Connect for a few days as well as IRC.
Direct Connect is available for anyone who wants to try it at http://www.neo-modus.com

I am getting more and more used to IRC than Direct Connect but Direct Connect seems more user friendly.

IRC has far more users and channels to pick from as well as the fact that direct Connect requires you to have shared files as Ryan says.

Direct Connect is point and click where IRC is all command based.

I still haven't managed to complete a download off any of them though but I am getting there.

IRC is my choice to carry on with because I think that when it eventually clicks with me then it will be dead straight forward.

  21. By the way dumwaldo I did the whois search and it told me exactly where to find you but when I tried to find the room I couldn't.

    Tooooo many LOL

  22. Grokster : I like it just as much as Kazaa/Morpheus but it connects about 45 seconds faster for me so I use it. Plus I like the colors better.

  23. IRC is best. If your looking for 0 day Divx movies try #Divxz on EFnet and if you want SVCD try #SVCD-ISO on EFnet and #XtremeSVCD on DALnet. Newsgroups are good if your willing to pay $15-40 for a good pay new server like GigaNews, Easynews or Newsfeeds or your ISP is Roadrunner(they have the best ISP provided news servers)because most ISP's news server are horrible.
