  1. MY ULTIMATE AIM: To CREATE DVDs (after editing and authoring) of CERTAIN PROGRAMS ON TV channels through an avermedia capture card

Alternative 1 - capture thru the capture card software in mpeg dvd pal setting at resolution of 720 x 576 (is this the right resoltuion for this alternative)

Alternative 2 - capture in uncompressed AVI (what resoltuion for final DVD?), edit and convert and author to DVD

Please recommend the best capture resolutions (theoretically) that i should try to get best results for both alternatives dvd mpeg DVD and AVI depending on what your recommend of the above two

I have 768 MB RAM and a 3.06 Ghz processor and enough disk space even for uncompressed avi

I would say capture directly to MPEG-2. When I record programs for DVD, I set it so it goes directly to MPEG-2 so that I can just edit, author, and burn.

If you go with uncompressed AVI, which I think will not work on your current setup due to only having 768MB of RAM, you will start to drop frames. Then, if you were to sucessfully capture in uncompressed AVI, which is pretty huge, you would have to then, edit anything you don't want out, convert to MPEG-2, then Author to DVD, which would tack on an extra 2 hrs to the whole project.

Also, the DVD Pal setting at Resolution 720x576 is correct.

First, are you sure uncompressed is an option for your avermedia capture card?

Alternative 1 gets to a result with least effort. If you encode during capture at DVD bitrate and "editing" is just cutting segments out, then your DVD will be good but not as good as Alaternative 2 if each step is done properly.

Try it both ways and see if the difference is worth all the effort.

See https://www.videohelp.com/dvd for allowed DVD resolutions.
